Our Choir Director – Charles Harman

Charles Harman began his vocal training at the age of five. He sang in children’s choirs in school and church, including St. Peter Anglican Boys Choir in Portland, Oregon, an affiliate of the Royal School of Church Music. In his teens he sang in his school’s award-winning concert choir, and in the MENC honor choir that represented five western U.S. states. Chuck also studied ballet and was involved in theatre, playing lead roles in several high school and university productions.

Charles graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where his studies included vocal training as well as training in teaching and conducting choral and instrumental groups.

He sang in the college’s nationally recognized touring choir under Dr. L. Stanley Glarum, an internationally known choral composer and conductor. Through Dr. Glarum, he was able to meet and work with other known choral composers such as, Norman Luboff, Robert de Cormier, Paul Christiansen, and Jester Hairston.

While at University he took theatre dance classes, danced with a local ballet company, and appeared as an extra when the National Ballet of Canada performed in Portland, Oregon.

Charles earned his M. Ed. Degree and moved to British Columbia, where he taught both Choral and Instrumental music, as well and Drama and Social Studies, in the public school system until his retirement.

He has directed various adult vocal groups, bands and orchestras, including being the charter conductor of the Barbershop chorus in Kamloops. In 2002, an opportunity arose to teach music in New York City. During his 2 years in New York, Chuck sang with the Metropolitan Singers and studied orchestral conducting at Julliard.

Over the years, Charles has remained active in community and professional theatre, performing in plays, musicals and operas with various groups including Pacific Opera Victoria, Victoria Operatic Society and Western Canada Theatre Company. Since moving to Nanaimo with his wife, Mary Jackson, he has been very active with The Ladysmith Little Theatre as an actor, director, lighting designer and board member.   He sings with the St. Paul’s Anglican Church choir and is involved with the Opera Nanaimo’s upcoming Christmas production, Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Charles’s real joy is sharing his musical skills by directing a Choral Group, and he is happy to have found that with AVIVA Chorus.
